BACK TO MAIN STUDENT PAGE PLACES TO EAT WITH A GROUP OF MATES
Whether its for a birthday, results celebrations, or just because everyone made it to the end of freshers week without catching freshers flu – there are plenty of places to find yourself welcomed as a group for some tasty dinner that won’t break the bank.
Nandos
Bedford House, Princesshay Sq, Exeter, EX1 1LR 01392 436080Portugese chicken restaurant. Part of a chain, so probably not unfamiliar, but the kind of place that caters for most tastes with ease, and where you wont choke at the price. Choose how much spice you want on your marinated chicken, and order it as pieces, half a chicken, or even a whole chicken if you want to share. Combine chicken with sides to create a feast for you and all your mates to enjoy. www.nandos.co.uk
Old Timers
Little Castle St, Exeter, EX4 3PX 01392 477704Find this place on the little alley way that leads up to Timepiece. Inside you will find a cosy pub with large tables to fit all your mates around. They usually have a deal for pizza and a drink for £7, their pate is delicious, and the soup de jour is pretty easy on the wallet too (staff are friendly too). Do not go there without ordering a portion of spiral fries though…mmm
The Imperial
New North Rd, Exeter, EX4 4HF 01392 434050A favorite amongst students new and old, a Wetherspoons situated close to the uni, this place serves good cheap filling meals where everyone can afford to eat like a king. Good drink deals to wash it all down with too.
Starz
18 Lower North Street, Exeter 01392 256625Dark and cosy cocktail bar down underneath the Iron Bridge specialising in American Classics. Starters all cost under £5 ranging from nachos to spicy chicken strips, or choose appetisers to share if you can’t decide. Then there is a host of meat from the grill raning £9-£14. But our recommendation is the burgers, made to their own special recipe, they will mean you don’t have to eat for another week if you manage to finish it. www.starzuk.com
La Tasca
26 Bedford Street, Exeter, EX1 1GJ 01392 434488Spanish Tapas in the lovely setting of Princesshay. Everyone can order a couple of dishes, and you can then try a bit of everything. Order plenty of bread and olive oil to make things go further. We would recommend a jug of Sangria for that totally authentic experience. We do have to say here that we have consistently found dishes to be very over priced for what you actually get, but perhaps the chance to feel like you’re on holiday makes up for it. www.latasca.co.uk
Tiger Bills
7 North Street, Exeter 01392 215499Tiger Bills offers a great fusion of American and Thai food under one roof. You can mix and match your meal so you are not limited to choosing dishes from one menu alone. They serve a great range of cocktails (the best we’ve sampled in the city) as well as draught beer and tidy wine list. Open for lunch where you can get 2 meals for £8.95 from their lunch menu and they are soon to be opening a Thai buffet. A new addition to the food scene and one definitely worth sampling! www.tigerbills.co.uk
Tyepyedong
175 Sidwell St, Exeter 01392 251888Meaning ‘a place to eat without the fuss’, this is an independent family run business serving oriental fusion food - a mix of Japanese and Chinese food with other Asian influences. Like Wagamama with its bench seating style, but with the perks of an independent restaurant. www.tyepyedong.com
Wagamama
16 Bedford Street, Exeter, EX1 1LL 01392 274 810A large chain of Japenese fast food restaurant. You will be seated at long canteen style benches, next to other diners, but with enough distance that you don’t have to share your dinner with them! Perfect though if there are a few of you. You cannot pre book for large parties so make sure you get there early to sit together. Orders are placed and then cooked and served when they are ready – do don’t expect it all to come at once. www.wagamama.com
