WHY WE HEART OUR CITY
Exeter is a lovable jumble of contrasts. The city centre has a small-town atmosphere yet it’s got cosmopolitan cred thanks to the swanky Princesshay Shopping Centre, and an ever-diversifying food and drink scene.
The chain store-jammed High Street has the independent boutiques and galleries of Gandy Street just metres away, or if you follow it down to Fore Street you’ll end up amidst the West Quarter’s eclectic jumble of arts, vintage and music outlets to name but a few.
Have we mentioned history yet? Exeter can be rightly proud of its 12th century cathedral, and buildings from nearly every post-medieaval era. In the summer the Cathedral Quarter vibrates with tourists, office workers, families, students, and everyone else in between.
Exeter may be creaking with history but its large student population keep it dragged up-to-date and nicely chilled out. This is Devon after all – there’s no point getting stressed.
There’s also no risk of city blues when you’re surrounded by rollin’ Devon hills offering a myriad of walking and cycling opportunties. The edges of Dartmoor can be seen on a clear day while the city centre’s squawking seagulls are a reminder that the coast is a short bus ride away.
If that sounds like too much effort don’t worry. There’s the churning River Exe slicing through the city and luring all with its waterside charms: long stretches of river bank, picturesque bridges and a cobblestone quayside.
Spoilt really, aren’t we?
